The Responder is a joint R&D project by Rolls-Royce, Volvo Penta, UllmanDynamics, CPAC Syst, Zodiac and Ray Marine, to demonstrate State of the Art in Human Factors and MMI.

A new RIB, the “850 Responder”, is fitted with twin Volvo Penta D4, twin Rolls Royce 240 W-jets, QL interceptors and the new integrated control system as well as the latest technology in semi active high-impact shock-mitigating seats for boats.

The handlebar based, fly-by-wire control system fully integrates engine for boat data, navigation data and commands for engines, nozzles, buckets, interceptors, communication and navigation. With redundant systems for maneuvering, the navigator will be able to control the vessel if needed.

Two high-resolution screens present all data from boat and environment to the pilot and navigator. The concept has been shown to significantly enhance boat control and reduce impact forces on the crews. This is accounted for by shorter response times and better awareness by the
driver.
