Herbert Nitsch Sets the Freediving World Record to 214 Meters

Austrian Herbert Nitsch did mid June something most of us don't even dare to dream about. Nitsch renewed his earlier 185 meters No Limit -free diving world record by an unbelievable 214 meter/702 feet dive.

This new record, dived in Spetses, Greece, is 29 meters deeper than the previous one, and was done in the AIDA - International Association for the Development of Free Diving - sled discipline No Limit.

The record dive was monitored by three specially modified Suunto D9 dive boat computers, the official AIDA depth instruments. The dive computers provided the dive profile with the depth, average descent speed (3.1m/s) and average ascent speed (4.0m/s). Nitsch went down to 214 meters in 1 minute 45 seconds, stayed there for three second, and came up to complete the dive in 4 minutes 24 seconds. The robust and high-quality Suunto D9s worked without any problems during the demanding conditions and were able to give AIDA the vital information they required after the dive.

Suunto D9 is the world's first dive computer to integrate a digital sailboat compass and wireless tank for boat data reception and it combines all dive-critical information in one wrist-instrument. Instead of monitoring a multitude of gauges, the diver can concentrate on what is important - diving.

The record dive boat log and the profile are shown at www.aida-international.org
