Press release from SIRENA VOILE - 2008-08-21

1st SL16 World Championship 3rd SL Gold Cup 2008

The first SL16 World Championship will be held in La Baule from August 25th to the 29th. This sports catamaran designed by Yves Loday, 1992 Olympic Gold Champion in Tornado, is build and developed by Sirena, located in Le Pouliguen.

During four days, forty teams from all over the world will compete to win the honour of being World Champion.

The United Arabian Emirates, Equator, Denmark, Brazil are coming from far away to race against the French, the English, Swiss and Dutch.
Simultaneously to this first SL16 World Championship, the third edition of the SL Gold Boat cup will be raced with the SL 16 and SL15.5.
These two boat catamarans, with identical hulls, have different marine equipment and sails. This allows two versions: a “school boat for boat” with the SL15.5 and a faster catamaran with the SL16.
The SL16 is accessible to all, young and adults, for races and leisure, she is competitive and easy to manœuvre and is ISAF preferred catamaran for the youth sailing world championship.

This magnificent show will be completed by the Champions Trophy where many famous French and International skippers will compete. Bruno Peyron and Frank Cammas, plus this year Esperanza Perez (first Spanish woman to have crossed the Atlantic alone), and a bunch of well renowned champions will dispute the first place in this Trophy. Billi Besson and Arnaud Jarlegan, French Tornado Olympic Teammembers, Yvan Bourgnon, Jean-Pierre Dick, Mathieu Feurprier, Jean Maurel, Rob White, all skippers and regatta sailors, will be present for this international sailing event. They will be accompanied, on the SL16, by the world championship competitors for a race starting from the beach of La Baule.
The sensational show will start on Friday 29th of August at 3PM. It will be followed by the closing ceremony at 8 PM, at the La Baule Sailboat yacht Club (Villa Mortureux), where the title of World Champion and SL Gold Cup Champion will be awarded.
