20-Year-Old Floating Breakwater Endures Gale-Force Icelandic Storm

In early October, a strong winter storm hit Reykjavik Harbor in Iceland with 15-18 m/s average winds and gusts as powerful as 28-31 m/s. For almost two days, 1m swells pounded the dependable SF 300 Floating Breakwater from SF Marina. Even in this powerful weather, it continued to attune up to 45% of the waves. Amazing videos capturing the breakwater in action can be seen at www.sfmarinausa.com/gallery.html#videos.

The Reykjavik Harbor installation was completed in the spring of 1991 by Kroli, SF Marina's Icelandic partner. With three sections measuring 3m x 20m, the SF 300 Breakwater has been used in this tough location for almost 20 years and was only recently serviced in June 2009.

The SF 300 is SF Marina's smallest breakwater. Other sizes range from 3m to 6m in width standard and up to 10m custom. Engineered to handle the most aggressive seas and harsh marine conditions, the time-tested breakwaters are constructed from reinforced concrete and styrofoam for superior strength, stability and buoyancy. Designed to withstand ice-stress, they have a service life of 30-50 years and require hardly any maintenance.

Headquartered in Goteborg, Sweden, SF Marina is a leader in concrete docks and floating breakwaters. The company can custom design its long-lasting products to fit any site.
