World-leading mast manufacturer Seldén Mast is launching an own complete range of deck hardware.
The new Seldén product group consists of ball bearing and plain bearing blocks for boats, wire blocks, high-load blocks, cam cleats and valley cleats, as well as swivels with cam cleats, and ratchet blocks for dinghies and keel boats.
“We, ourselves, use some 100,000 blocks a year in our own rig systems. So we had good reason to become our own supplier”, says Mats-Uno Fredrikson, Marketing Manager at Seldén.
The technical solutions for the range offer the right strength for the task in combination with extremely low friction. The ball bearing blocks are intended for low dynamic loads. The boat bearings are placed in an acetal bearing cage to keep them apart and minimise friction. Using stainless steel ball bearings enabled Seldén to utilise a great deal of the block’s potential; the working load is, in fact, all of 50% of the breaking load.
The plain bearing blocks are intended for higher loads. Here, an interesting safety feature is the stainless steel strap that takes up the load. The cheeks are made from Grivory® composite (50% glass fibre and 50% polyamide) to make them so torsionally stiff, thereby ensuring that the line does not wedge between the cheek and the sheave.
Several years’ development work lies behind the new range, and the products have been thoroughly tested, both in the lab and at sea, including user-evaluation within the World Match Tour. The blocks were also supplied for sea trials with Seldén’s boat building customers already in 2007, and are now all set to enter the huge aftermarket.
