The ships of this type represent the third generation of landing ships developed and built at the PEENE-WERFT. The flush-deck hull is constructed with longitudinal frames.

The foreship is characterised by the multi-sectioned bow flap and ramp. By using the trim and ballast tanks a minimum forward draft will be achieved thus allowing the beaching and the roll off and roll on of wheel and chain vehicles.

Via a lowerable deckramp light vehicles can be stowed on main deck. The armament is made up of two 57 mm dual purpose twin mounts and two 30 mm twin aa-guns. This armament was later increased by two 40 barrel rocket launchers with a fully automatic reloading system. The vessel is also fitted with rails for mines.

The landing ships are equipped with extensive communication plants consisting of seven receiving and transmitting stations. Furthermore a radiation warning plant and an automatic gas alarm is installed.
