Catamaran Outremer 49 Multihull Outremer Yachting
Speed isn’t exclusive to ocean racers or round-the-oceans competitors. Since the dawn of time, man has always tried to go as fast as possible to get from one point to the other. The Outremer catamaran has a part to play in this natural evolution. Onboard, speed becomes child’s play.
The pleasure of speed: it’s not a goal in itself, or an obsession, but to go fast across the water always gives you a real sense of inner jubilation, especially when you overtake other yachts effortlessly! This is what will happen to you aboard an Outremer. Without the slightest risk, you will unquestionably be one of the fastest on the water. Easy tacks, good speed and course upwind thanks to the daggerboards, you just won’t believe it.
The sensation of speed: 10 knots, the symbolic barrier for a number of monohulls, becomes a cruising speed aboard an Outremer. You are now regularly sailing at between 12 and 15 knots. The leeward bow eases without constraint, slicing through the sea in total serenity. It’s as if your Outremer is on tracks. You or your automatic pilot guide it along without a trace of apprehension. You’ll admire the wake her slender hulls carve out at speed. You bear away a few degrees, the tradewinds are now well-established and surfing on the Atlantic swell often ends at over 20 knots. It’s the end of your watch and you have to give up the helm, or relinquish your watch on deck, praying to Neptune and the wind Gods that nobody will beat YOUR record.
The safety of speed: The faster a boat goes, the more it is master of its own destiny. The performance of your Outremer, combined with the increasingly accurate weather information available from onboard, will enable you to take action against the wind and sea rather than simply endure it. It’s up to you to anticipate the wind shifts, to position yourself as best you can against the coming weather system. Thanks to the high average speeds of the Outremer, this dynamic sailing is all too real. What’s on offer is a reduced passage time, less exposure to the vagaries of the weather and a lot more downwind than close upwind on the menu.
Performance:why? how?
In 2000, the number 1 in the series, Bagnoles de l’Orne, won The Transat of legend. She has since been cruising. Three main factors contribute to the exceptional performance of Outremer catamarans.
The determining architectural principles: For Outremer, safety is the primary criterion. This criterion has led to the hulls being extended as much as possible to increase the longitudinal and diagonal stability of the catamaran, which limits its ability to bury into the waves. Whilst reducing the stresses on the structure, this maximum extension also favours a ratio which is crucial to performance: the length/beam ratio at the waterline.
The short central pod contributes to an optimised weight centring. High above the water, the risk of impact in the waves is reduced as much as possible, hence safety, comfort as well as performance are increased.
The use of daggerboards not only leads to the boat being able to sail closer to the wind, but also enables her to hold her course better downwind. Thanks to this additional support, the true power of the Outremer can be freely expressed.
Some virtuous technical choices: Weight is the multihull’s main enemy. A catamaran must be light to be safe, high performance and comfortable. The reduced windage, the slender hulls and the short pod reduce the quantity of materials needed in the structure, whilst providing incomparable reliability and longevity.
Down below, each element is selected from the lightest materials: Nidalu work-top, soles and foam sandwich doors…
Exceptional expertise: All the crafts are involved in the design of our catamarans. Each Outremer Yachting employee, whether he is a laminator, accommodation planner, electrician or rigger, is attentive to each element involved in the manufacture. Weight, structural resistance, practical longevity, all these parameters are permanently in everyone’s mind to ensure the coherence of your boat with its specifications. Some employees have worked for Outremer Yachting for over 20 years.
