A unique emergency medical kit, which contains all the key components needed to monitor and stabilise a patient’s condition in an emergency, has been developed by Wales-based specialists Ocean Medical International (OMI).
The ‘OMI Emergency Medical Grab Bag’ has been designed by the company’s MD Dr David Irons, and is based on David’s huge experience of practising medicine and dealing with emergencies in remote locations all around the world – from Argentina to Borneo. Besides being a tutor for the MCA he has also provided telemedicine advice for complicated medical problems on large vessels all over the world and understands the logistics involved in commercial marine settings.
Over the last few years, OMI’s diverse range of medical emergency packs has become the first choice in medical support on hundreds of ocean-going boats, ships and yachts – each of them meeting specific industry standards, depending upon the purpose and size of vessel. Now all that experience has been distilled into a single, all-purpose Emergency bag that can provide full emergency resources anywhere on a merchant vessel or support ship along with the essential range of well organised back up drugs and equipment required under all regulatory flags.
The OMI Emergency Medical Grab Bag weighs in at 19kg (41.8lbs) and can be carried as a backpack or in three separate sections – which also makes it easier to stow away in boats with restricted space.
It quickly zips open into three easy stages to give you almost every essential piece of medical kit you could need to monitor, resuscitate and stabilise a patient – including drugs, sutures, bandages, oxygen, even a defibrillator.
The most important items are available immediately to hand, and everything is in logical order. Every aspect of the contents has been thoroughly thought through – from a head torch to work in the dark to easy-to-follow ‘panic instructions’ in simple words and diagrams.
Moreover, you can subscribe to a 24-hour remote back up from anywhere in the world, giving you access to experienced medical staff should you need them to talk you through handling a medical emergency.
The OMI Emergency Medical Grab Bag is buoyant and has been fully tested in harsh wet weather conditions, it is fire retardant and fungus/bacterial resistant, and heavily padded to take knocks.
