Also, because AC motors can place significantly more weight in the thruster compartment, vessels with marginal forward buoyancy should choose hydraulic drives.

TRAC Thrusters in the range 20 to 200 hp may be configured for AC motor drive. The thruster motor is controlled by a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) to enable variable thruster speed and also to limit motor starting inrush current.

Power for the AC motor is obtained from a suitable ship's generator (one able to supply large non-linear loads). Powerline harmonic filters may be required between the generator and the VFD.
